About Girls For A Change:

Clever Girls Collective selected GFC as the non-profit for this generous Yahoo! campaign because it matches our mission of empowering women to help each other. Clever Founder Sheila Bernus Dowd was a GFC volunteer and member of the advisory board, so we have first-hand experience with their commitment to helping girls become community leaders. Here’s how they describe themselves:
Girls For A Change (GFC) is a national organization that empowers girls to create social change. We invite young women to design, lead, fund and implement social change projects that tackle issues girls face in their own neighborhoods. GFC empowers girls for personal and social transformation. The program inspires girls to have the voice, ability and problem solving capacity to speak up, be decision makers, create visionary change and realize their full potential.”

Why Should You Make Yahoo! Your Homepage? It offers…
1. Personalized content: The Yahoo! homepage delivers you the most relevant content based on your interests, time of day, and what’s most popular with other users like you.

2. Your World and The World: The Yahoo! homepage uniquely brings together your world (your email, local news) with the world around you (current events, entertainment news, financial updates and more)

3. Human Interest: Articles on the homepage have a human approach – more than just news, it delivers human interest stories that you just have to click on.

Empowering young girls earlier on in this day and age is a MUST!  With bullying on the rise, and not only in-person bullying but Facebook and email bullying as well; giving young ladies a strong core of self-confidence makes for smart leaders among girls giving them the strength and courage to manage the tough teen years with ease!  Programs like Girls For A Change and for us locally that I 100% support, Girls on the Run, definitely give this mother of a soon-to-be-baby girl a bit more confidence on my end that the “drama years” to come may not be as bad as everyone makes them out to be!

And having a 10 year old niece, watching from a distance as she enters into the age of tougher school work, friendships that come and go, boys, cyber bullying, self-esteem issues, and that’s only on Mondays…I truly understand how my sister, her mother, can’t seem to shake that everyday headache!  Parents too need help to get through the adolescent years and thanks to Girls For A Change, mom can get involved too! About 5-10 girls and two women “coaches” make up a Girl Action Team. Teams design and implement a social change project that will make a lasting change in their neighborhood, city or school. More than 100 Girl Action Teams meet across the US and internationally each year.

As back-to-school approaches faster than I thought it would, it’s time for you as a parent, if you have a young lady on your hands, to look into programs like this one!  Or at least support the GFC organization simply by changing your home page for a bit, just til July 1st!

The merger of Bravado! Designs and Medela {a modeling session}

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Some of the most noteworthy news in our industry this year came from Bravado! Designs as they announced being acquired by Medela; the joining of these two forces in the breast feeding world  is the perfect match, and I was beyond thrilled to have the privilege of joining both sides of the duo companies earlier in June at a training session they held here in Charlotte, NC.  First, to be able to sit back and hear how Canadian based Bravado! Designs was started at a kitchen table by, of course, a mother and her sewing machine and to be able to watch, only a few short years later, as that mother’s company begins their merger with the best known and respected breast feeding international company of Medela, would make any young mother and business owner eager to reach for the stars and push forward through difficult times!!  Second, I was there, as an 8 month pregnant woman, to model nursing bras and tanks in front of 20 + reps, male and female!  YIKES!

No worries, it was actually a breeze {sorry, no pics folks!}!  Being pregnant should be the most non self-conscious time in your life; it is with me anyway!  Within a matter of weeks I’ve modeled nursing bras in front of a conference room full of people, had an amazing maternity photo session in the middle of a busy shopping plaza, and even modeled again for a lifestyle logo revision project with my business partners!  I feel great, and look great {per everyone else…} so why not do a few things I never dreamed of doing!  Hence, spending the morning hours with the amazing ladies behind Bravado! Designs and their Medela counter-parts!

It was enjoyable and educational, I walked away with more knowledge about the breast feeding world than I ever thought possible; which is good since obviously I had my bra size wrong, I had some pretty old nursing wear in my drawers, and I didn’t own anything that could function pre AND post pregnancy.  Having owned Bravado! Designs wear in the past…but having no idea where my stuff is at this time…I was thrilled and thankful to walk away from my little modeling session with, not only a paycheck, but also an arm full of precious, super comfortable and supportive, bras and tanks for a true pleasurable nursing experience to come!

The Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra is my favorite and a favorite among the reps and public as well, including the Bra Conversion kit which will allow you to change your nursing bra into a regular bra once nursing is complete; how brilliant is that!!

What you’ll love about the Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra:

* Seamless Nursing Bra: seamless buttery soft and stretchy fabric that’s comfortable to wear all day and virtually invisible under clothing.
* Foam Cups: removable molded foam cups provide you with a lining to hide nipples or breast pads that you can remove or wear anytime you need to.
* Bravado Best-Seller: One of our best sellers because it molds to your unique shape. The seamless design and fabric perfectly supports your unique shape and movement. Jennifer Garner loves to wear the Body Silk to Yoga Class (We agree! The Body Silk makes a GREAT Yoga nursing bra).
* Easy to Size: This is the easiest bra to find your size which makes it perfect as either a maternity bra or a nursing bra. It comfortably fits your changing shape each step of the way.
* Full Access: Cups unclip at the shoulder and drop down and away from your body to give baby full access to your breast, providing you and your baby with skin-to-skin contact which is essential, specially when establishing a breastfeeding rhythm.
* Nursing clips that stay closed: proprietary clips lie flat under close-fitting clothing and easily open and close with one hand.
* A proprietary Bra Conversion Kit (BCK), is now attached to your Bravado Nursing Bra and can be used to convert it to a “regular bra” once your nursing journey is complete.

A remarkable bra that I’m wearing even before nursing begins, that is stretchy enough to grow with me as my milk comes in, and a bra that will continue on with me even after that first year…and a bra that will continue on with both companies, Bravado! and Medela, as they journey together into their first year of this exciting joint adventure!  Congrats to these two fabulous companies and thanks to them for letting me join in their success if only for a few short hours!  {Read the statement about the merger here}  And just an FYI, yes yes, Bravado! Designs products are sold right here in Charlotte at our very own belly elan maternity boutique!!

Bright Starts Hop Along Carrier Toy bar

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Our new infant baby carrier is the best one I think we’ve ever had, and it’s pimped out!  We’ve gone through the brands over the years and thanks to our friends at Britax, settled on the Chaperone in a fabulous cowmooflage print for our dear Gracie!  To compliment and complete our new carrier and keep baby entertained and mommy’s sanity it tack, a Padalily of course {hand-me-down courteous of miss Nidhie from belly elan}, a puddle pad for those long trips and leaky diapers, our most favorite aden & anais star swaddle blanket that we’ve always used as a car seat blanket since they are so breathable, and our new favorite toy, the Bright Stars Hop Along Carrier Toy bar!!

Hello little froggy!!  With all the bells and whistles to keep baby as entertained as possible for trips to the doctors or visiting grandma for vacation, this colorful and bright little toy bar builds on all the senses making for a happy baby at all times while in their infant car seat carrier! Let them explore with giggles and glee instead of screaming and crying; this is especially brilliant for those of you who have babies who are not huge fans of their carriers and car rides.  Even for those that pass out the second the car starts, as they grow, they stay awake longer and need a bit of entertainment no matter the outing or destination.  We had one of these fun tools when Aidan was a baby and mommy was clever enough to strap it to the stroller tray when he was older and out of the infant car seat, giving it longer play life!  At only $10.99, Bright Starts made a must have accessory for your infant car seat carrier whether you have a brand new one like we do this time around or are using the same one as the last pregnancy.  I wasn’t looking forward to lugging around a carrier yet again, but now that it’s in the car and all decked out, I’m READY!!  Come on GRACIE!!!
