Spending your summer at the beach or in a pool is the best!  Everyone is happy.   Swimming is a popular recreational activity. It is good exercise and fun! Even though pools have modern disinfection systems and lakes, rivers, and oceans have many environmental improvements, there has been an increase in the number of illnesses associated with swimming. Children are especially at risk of suffering from more severe illnesses if infected.  So you should be aware and take necessary precautions to prevent your child from catching a “bug”.

What about the chlorine? Chlorine in swimming pools does kill germs that make people sick, but it takes chlorine longer to kill some germs. Crypto (Cryptosporidium) can survive for days in even properly chlorinated swimming pools. Therefore, you should practice healthy swimming behaviors and reduce the risk of getting ill. Parents of young children should take children on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Change diapers in a bathroom – not at poolside. Wash children thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.

Why use swim diapers? Most public swimming pools require babies to use a state approved swim diaper. Swim diapers can help stop the spread of E.coli and other bacteria.  Swim diapers have a waterproof layer on the outside and a soft absorbent layer on the inside. Swim diapers should fit snugly. They are designed to be worn alone but may be worn over a disposable diaper or under a regular swimming suit.

Many states require swim diapers when diaper-aged children use a public pool. When a swim diaper fits properly, most bacteria including E.coli are prevented from entering the water. So prevent messy pool accidents by using a swim diaper! Swim diapers won’t fall apart in the water and therefore won’t clog pool filters. Because they don’t absorb water, they don’t become waterlogged and heavy. Therefore, they do not absorb urine (so please beware so you don’t get a wet lap!). If swim diapers would absorb urine they would also absorb water, potentially pulling baby under water. This is also true for disposable swim diapers. Some like to use pocket cloth diapers or diaper covers as swim diapers. Please be aware that water can get trapped in the cover not only causing a mess but could potentially be unsafe to your baby.  Reusable swim diapers can be washed and reused all season! There are many different styles, colors, and prints to choose from.  Like this one below, Noah has worn it for swim lessons for a few months now.  We have not had any incidences.  The side snaps make the diaper super easy to put on and take off when its wet.  Make sure you get the right size according to your child’s weight for the best fit.  We have really enjoyed using our swim diaper from Itsy Bitsy Swim.
