Today the BabyElan {daily} team would like to show you a bit of “us”…a photo shoot recently done with Sarah and Dana, their kids, and the brilliant Armando Bellmas!  Looking for a modern, unique twist on photography at it’s finest, look no further!  A true professional, yet laid back and super kid-friendly, Armando creates masterpieces in life while you and I just pass it by!  Enjoy these amazing pics plus a quick little interview with this clever man! {Scroll to the bottom to see the great shots from our own photo shoot}

Tell us a little about your typical work day:

I have a pretty unconventional work life. Some days I’m making photos, others I’m behind a computer retouching images, marketing my tail off, writing for my blog, or taking a morning off to hang out with my kids. Every day is different. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tell us about your most enjoyable photo shoot:

Any day that I’m behind a camera making photographs is a good day. The photo shoots where I get paid are very enjoyable (ha ha!). I’m always making photos, though. I have a couple of personal projects that I’m always working on. Those are always very rewarding because there is no pressure or set expectation. I can just create. The freedom to shoot what you want, when you want — and possibly fail at getting the shot and learn from it — is priceless.

Tell us about your most stressful photo shoot:

They’re all stressful to some degree. A lot goes into a photo shoot that most people just aren’t aware of. Usually, on bigger productions for ad agencies and marketing companies, I have a producer that helps with logistics and assistants that help with my gear and lighting. Then there a the shoots where it’s just me, the subject, and my camera. Ultimately I am responsible for making the photos so I’m usually pretty focused on the task at hand. There’s always a little sweat on my brow as I work. That’s just a sign that I’m really into what is going on.

What is your best advice for the amateur photographer, in trying to capture the beauty of his/her family on camera?

Don’t force the shots. Many times people will get too into the posed thing. While it’s not always a bad thing, try to look for the moments that belong to your family. My 7 year old son likes to play with trucks, cars, and horses. One morning at breakfast he had all his little toy horses lined up around his plate. That was a distinct Bellmas family moment. I slowly got the camera out, aimed it at him, and shot. No warning, no thinking, just did it.

The other advice is turn off your flash (if you can). Explore your camera’s settings a bit and see what you can do with a higher ISO and no flash (photos will require less light at higher ISOs). Your photos will lose the flash shadow that screams amateur. That’s a good thing.

Anything else you’d like to add that you think our readers would find interesting?

As I mentioned before, my work life is pretty unconventional. I have a blog related to my business but it normally doesn’t have anything to do with it. The blog, be still please [the link is http://www.bellmas.com/blog], is a place for me to show prospective clients more about me beyond the photography. I listen to music, think too much, love art, and read A LOT. (Currently reading a book a week and blogging about it.) Every now and then I’ll post photos from a shoot, a day trip, or of my kids. Mostly it’s about the things that inspire me when I get out from behind the camera: other photographers, painters, books, music, poetry, the ocean, etc. It helps people understand me better and it inspires me to go out and create.

Say hi to Armando on FB

Picture Your Kids As Art – Los Angeles Based Photographer {DISCOUNT}

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

We’re so excited to begin this new series of posts with you today, as we think it’s exciting to read about other businesses, tips, advice, etc. rather than just product reviews all the time!

So without further ado, I bring you Kazia Cumbler of “Picture Your Kids as Art”, an LA Based children’s photographer. Kazia has graciously shared with us, her three steps to taking better pictures of your kids!

3 Steps to Taking Better Pictures of Your Kids:

Photography, like many art forms, is largely subjective.  But in the case of child photography, beauty most certainly lies in the eye of the beholder–especially when that beholder is the mother or father of the subject.

I started my child photography business, Picture Your Kids as Art, over 6 years ago. In that time I have photographed hundreds of wonderful families and kids.  And true, while I have found there is no one way to take a good photograph–no magic formula–there are a few important steps to remember if you want to take your photography skills from ‘The Pits’ to Leibowitz.

1.  Get Low:
Get eye to eye with your little guy (or gal.)  Snapping at his or her level will dramatically improve the perspective of your photos:
a) you wont be asking your little one to crane her neck to see you, and b) the photos will be from his or her point of view.

2.   Plan the Frame:
Composition is a very important element of photography.  With that in mind, make sure to pay attention to the crop around your subject.

A typical mistake of amateur shutterbugs is to place the head of the subject in the center of the frame.  This rookie mistake cuts the body off at the legs, and gives you dead space above the head.

Unless you’re trying to capture a beautiful sky scene, try putting the head at the top of the frame, and get more of the child’s body in your shot.

3.   Let it Bloom:
Patience is a virtue, right?  That’s what we teach our children.

Well here’s a great chance to take our own advice.  Instead of prodding your little ones to ’smile’ or ’say cheese’ just keep your eye in the viewfinder and wait for an authentic smile to happen, get your trigger finger ready and snap away.  The camera doesn’t lie when it comes to smiles–you can always tell the real from the fake.

Remember:  Child photography is more about capturing a moment than it is creating one.

For those of you lucky enough to live in the LA area, Kazia is generously offering 20% off a sitting fee!  Please just mention BabyElan when contacting Kazia!

Balance Baby {GIVEAWAY & FREE SHIPPING}

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

One last item to make your nursery complete, the interactive mobile.  The retail shops have so many to choose from, either to match your theme or with all the bells and whistles {music, a remote, educational patterns}, but what those brand names don’t offer is inspiring design  {most mobiles are so “loud” to the eyes it’s scary}, a treasured keepsake, a conversation piece {between baby and mobile, between baby and mommy} and a uniqueness that expands into any room in your home…um yes, we’re still talking about a mobile here!  A mobile that educates, stimulates, and soothes baby without all the bells and whistles!

I’m still in awe of Balance Baby!  We all hang pictures in our house, everywhere, but never with style like this!  For newborns, pictures of their siblings and family to welcome them into the world and to their new room, perfect for over the crib, over the changing table, in the window, or in the corner…wherever…you can tell just from the images that Balance Baby mobiles will stand out and be noticed no matter where they are placed!  Chat with even the youngest infants about the pictures you’ve chosen to display {8 pictures total}, engage with them, you’ll be amazed at how familiar they’ll become with those images and what a comfort your family photographs will bring!  For older babies {or for use in a playroom vs. a nursery} add pictures of letters, numbers, colors, animals, and more.  The Balance Baby can grow with you and your children to no end!  For adults, what a brilliant way to display your wedding pictures over the curio cabinet in the dining room, or for college students to hang pictures of their friends back home in their dorms.  Never ending possibilities, just needs a little creativity!   Here’s a thought…your boring office or cube at work could use a little face lift right?  Add a Balance Baby to the window or corner and watch the heads turn!  Father’s Day gift for his office perhaps??

These mobiles are wooden and painted {non-toxic of course} either snow or blackberry and come straight to you from Alaska.  Once your 8 4×6 pictures are added and it’s hung where you want it, it’s perfectly “balanced” and sways away, rotating the images slowly and calmly, simply gorgeous!  Okay, let’s talk gifts…any mommy-to-be you know would be thrilled with a Balance Baby, am I right??  We hung our sample mobile over our BabyElan {daily} showcasing table at our last All About Baby event and loved watching the pregnant ladies light up as they gazed upon the mobile hanging over their heads.  We added color photographs throughout our mobile {and actually display ours proudly in our playroom at home now}, but as you can see from images above, black and white pics are extremely striking!  For those of you ready to order, here’s your ordering information page, shipping is FREE to the US & Canada!

This is one of those products I could brag about for days…and I’m beyond thrilled to offer one up for a GIVEAWAY!  Let us know which color Balance Baby you would pick if you won and where in your house you would display it.  Contest ends in one week, good luck to all!

Wall decor is a necessity in making a house a home.  Lately, for some reason, I’ve visited plenty of homes where their owners are very sparse in the “art” department, some people never add photos or decor to their walls, NOTHING, just plain white walls!  That would drive me insane!  I’m an advocate of…not clutter per say…but of keeping variety alive amongst the art work in your home; this meaning personal pieces {photos of family and friends or handmade art by your children}, vintage or classic pieces {antiques or treasures passed down}, modern must haves {mirrors, wine racks, Pier One specials}, and than of course, those unique pieces that bring it all together.  Those are what I have for you today!

And we’re not talking hundreds of dollars spent on one of a kind art pieces, we’re talking distinctive art, at affordable prices!  Fresh Snapped Photos on Etsy offers brilliant, unique “photos” for you to display around your home or office, perfect for redecorating an entire room or for that last piece, for the final perfect touch added to any space!  These 5 x 7 images {or larger} fit all types of decor in all types of houses, whether you have a country home, a new modern condo, an old Victorian, or a studio apartment, you’ll find a unique photo at Fresh Snapped Photos that will look just right on that bare spot of wall you’ve been meaning to fill!

Meet the photographer Lori, the “artist” behind Fresh Snapped Photos {you’ll also find her and more of her masterpieces on her blog Paisley Wallpaper, at Marzipan Inc., and Fin-Roe}; she’s a busy little bee sharing her creations with the world along with her husband Chris, can you blame them for having 3 fabulous companies offering superb quality products…NOT AT ALL, I don’t know about you but I want to see more from Lori!  She’s got a gift for capturing life {and nature, and the world in general} at it’s finest moments and I would be honored to have her work displayed in my home!

For a fabulous Black Friday deal, from Friday November 27th to Monday November 30th, anyone that orders a fine-art print from Fresh Snapped Photos will get a 2nd print of equal or lesser value absolutely FREE!
