MamaElan Guest Writer: Ella from aboutBaby

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Oh the joys of being prego!!!  I do miss it so very much, I’m sure the Blakes with pop out a 4th at some point in time {don’t tell my husband I said that}!  I had easy, beautiful pregnancies…no really, I did!!  BUT, I SO agree with Ella below!  I’m sure you’ve been in this situation before, it’s fun seeing it from another mother’s point of view!  Ella is co-owner of aboutBaby {offering the aboutBaby.bibby we recently bragged about}, read more about Ella and her bibby here and her story below; enjoy your weekend all!

“I remember, the first time when I was pregnant in my late twenties. I felt ecstatic, overjoyed, happy, happy, happy. I told everyone I met, at the supermarket, in an elevator; at the movies, in the park, let’s just say if you were within hearing range, you knew I was pregnant. I literally told EVERYONE.
It didn’t matter that I didn’t show or that I myself just found out I was pregnant. I just wanted to share the biggest news of my life with one and all. But it seemed that my audience wanted to share as well. They wanted it seemed to connect to my news somehow…and this somehow translated into a physical gesture in response to my great announcement. Almost all reached out to touch me…I mean my belly. And that folks is not nice. The cold or the clammy hands would reach out and actually “feel” for the baby. “Yes, I feel the baby!”, the person would exclaim.
“No”, I would think to myself “you don’t feel a thing EXCEPT my stomach”. I didn’t appreciate such a gesture. It’s not nice. The first time it happened, a co-worker reached out and grabbed my belly with both hands and exclaimed “I think I felt a kick”. Well that’s personal isn’t it? I mean it’s my body, my baby and here is a stranger touching me. I was disturbed. I told my friends and they said that I was overreacting. I thought that maybe the hormones were playing kooky with me.
I was also pregnant in my mid-thirties. I was just as happy as the first time and shared the news with everyone …well perhaps I skipped the service people where I worked figuring they’ll soon “see” for themselves. And then the touching began again. It bothered me this time as much as the first time. But this time I said something. Something along the lines of “Oh, I am not comfortable with that gesture”. This was fine but I would say after the “touch of my belly” and that really didn’t help the situation any…i.e. me. I couldn’t just duck to escape. Could I?? I was beginning to wonder, what is the proper etiquette on the topic of “touching the belly of a pregnant woman”. Was it considered a good luck gesture in our culture? I was dumbfounded.
Surprise!! I was in my early forties when I was expecting once again. Nothing has changed …the hands tried to still reach out and touch….but this time before breaking the news to everyone I would announce the “please don’t touch” rule.”

Musicolor

Kids love to create!  I haven’t met a child who isn’t proud of something they drew or a song they learned to sing.  MusiColor combines these two childhood favorites and will cause hours of fun and many, many smiles as a result!

Each music disc comes as a blank canvas for kids to color.  The disc and markers are a “paint by letter” concept which allow kids to easily know which color goes where.  {Marker A colors all the A’s on the disc and so on.}  Once the disc has been colored kids insert it onto the player and the colors magically turn into music! {Choose to hear each song played by a piano, violin or horn!}  These are songs that most kids are familiar with and can sing right along with them.  There are also additional markers and discs available for purchase outside of the main MusicColor Kit.  That is always a bonus for me since there is nothing worse than having your child fall in love with a toy that can’t be replenished.

Our family received our own MusiColor to try out.  My five year old son couldn’t wait to get started.  As a preschooler he is very proud of his polished coloring abilities and made sure to point out to me how well he had colored inside the lines on the first disc he worked on.  It was also fun for him to use the “record player” by himself and he thought it was magic that his picture turned into a song.  My daughter who is almost three LOVES to dance and has so much fun during the “dance parties” we have with our MusiColor.  Although she is still working on her coloring skills she knows her colors and we used the markers to work on her letter recognition.  My little Mozart also likes to color on the blank discs to make her own music!

To find a musicolor for your kids visit them at Musicolor or deltacreative.com.  Delta Creative is an award winning company with toys you and your kids will love!  Enjoy!

Happy Solez Organics {GIVEAWAY & DISCOUNT}

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I can’t express clearly how thrilled I am that Katherine Accettura creator of yummy homemade goodies contacted Baby Elan {daily}.    It has been a treat getting to know her and see her business taking off!    She is brilliant, dedicated, so extremely creative and wonderfully friendly and warm.   You will love her products and you’ll love her.

Katherine created Happy Solez Organics in 2008 in order to provide well-made products to families who believe in using organic and eco-friendly products. By performing each step of the process when creating goods (design, preparing, sewing, marketing, selling, shipping, and more),see, brilliant!  very little waste is produced, and a very small carbon footprint is emitted. :-)
Selling goods locally and globally, and interacting with customers, has been an important part of the process in assuring that we will receive the best, American-made product possible.  Many of the fabrics used in Happy Solez Organics include Bamboo, Organic Cotton, 100% Recycled Materials, and also Reclaimed Materials. By making a smaller impact on our Earth, generations to come will be happier to live in a greener world.  Katherine would love to spin off something custom for you too!

Little Noah was fortunate to receive a perfect pair of organic booties from Katherine.  I told her he was trying to walk so she made sure to include skid pads on the bottom of his little pair, custom!  :-)   Such beautiful little booties for cute little feet. These shoes feature an Organic, Sustainable Liner that is made from half Bamboo and half Organic Cotton.  You all know how much I love bamboo!  And how smart to use it in the liner where your child’s feet will sweat.  Bamboo is super absorbent!  CLEVER  The exterior is constructed from Hand Printed Bali Batik Cotton. The colors are extremely beautiful on these and they are great for boys or girls. There is soft, cotton elastic around the openings so the booties stay put when baby kicks.  Noah has not kicked his off yet.  I’ve washed them twice and dried them.. by mistake actually but both times they came out perfectly fine.   We love them, they are so easy to put on and soft on his feet.  I get compliments often about these fantastic organic booties.

Nicholas was lucky enough to receive this adorable and super soft tee from the Happy Solez  Organics collection :-)   He wears it to pre-school regularly, I’ve washed it a ton in a normal cycle, even dried it too a few times.  The shape, color and fabric, stitching has worn perfectly.  I’m very happy when I see him wearing  his tee, he’s comfortable because the shirt fits him well.

Happy Solez Organics is about a lot more than booties as you are seeing.  Katherine is just getting started!  In a few short months she has added several new products to her homemade collection.  These adorable bags are an example!  I don’t know a little girl out there who would not cherish her own little bag made with some wonderful fabric.

Who is getting spring fever?  I am, I don’t usually either but Charlotte has had an odd winter, long and cold so I’m ready for sunny days full of sunshine and playing outside.   Katherine has been a busy bee sewing and designing all sorts of exciting products for Happy Solez Organics Spring Vintage Collection!    I get a rush of inspiration just looking at the fresh, clean bold prints she’s using for her spring line.   With new products like pouches, bags, Ipod bags and clothes, onsies, a lot of wonderful homemade items.   All very unique and gorgeous.

Little Joey gets to model our giveaway onsie from Happy Solez Organics with a super adorable applique fashionably stitched onto the onsie giving it a unique cheerful look.   Isn’t he handsome!

Katherine sews eco-cloths with scrubbers!   Better than a paper towel and gorgeous.  One of our readers will be able to win a set of your own!   You have to see her new website at Happy Solez Organics it is really the best way to see all her work.  The site isn’t completely finished but feel free to take a peek.  :-)   Her FaceBook page has many images of the products available, especially her recent bags and many zipper pouches.

Visit her Esty site at Happy Solez Organics and take advantage of a shopping discount.  Use Promotion Code LUXE10 during your Etsy Checkout.

Beyond excited to offer a Happy Solez Organics GIVEAWAY  for one lucky reader!   Katherine has graciously put together an adorable package of a sky blue baby onsie & her fabulous eco- cloths!   Here’s your EXTRA ENTRY…become a fan of Happy Solez Organics on FaceBook Contest ends in one week, good luck to all!!
